Freshwater Fish Habitat

Freshwater fishes adapt in fresh water environment. They must be capable enough to migrate from salted environment to a freshwater fish habitat. Fresh water has less salt, it is said to have less than 0.05 percent salinity. Fresh water fishes choose to reproduce in fresh water environment, but are usually spending their adulthood in sea water.

It is not that easy to choose or set up a habitat for fresh water fishes. There are few things that are needed to be considered. Their environmental adaptation will not be easier. We should help them manage the environment that we are giving them. Many water resource managers are not well-informed about fish habitats. But most countries give seminar and trainings in taking care of fresh water fishes.
Just like human, when we say “habitat,” it means a place to live in. But it should not be the place only. It should have all the necessary factors for them to live properly. Just like fresh water fishes, they should have chemical features—as well as physical and biological—that they need to go on with their life cycle. For fish’s habitat, we should always consider water temperature, amount and Ph level. Even if fishes are formed to live underwater, we should still think of water depth, velocity, turbidity and inorganic nutrient intensity.

Remember, the habitat’s quality will always affect fish’s nutrition, population and its whole community.
We should always think that fresh water fishes have evolved to occupy a wide range of territory or habitat. Their growth will depend on the type of home we will provide them. Here is where most communities got their problems. This problem will always require deep research and study on how to assess fresh water fish habitat. One should define the factors that will affect their habitat. If the factors were already defined, then we should accomplish good parameters to solve the factors affecting it.

As of most fresh water fish habitat researchers, always look into the accurate habitat assessment. It will require knowledge in fish ecology. There may be a problem in migration but the above factors should be considered to provide resolution, permanently or temporarily. Check your water velocity, depth, physical barriers, and structures that will affect good water flow. In the process of taking care of fresh water fishes, consider the amount of turbidity the water need so that you can monitor the fish habitat against erosion.

Aside from the factors mentioned, it is also necessary to segregate fishes by their habitat requirements. There are differences between the water temperatures that a certain fish needs. Some fishes can live in 24 degrees centigrade, while other can go with 5-15 degrees. We should be considerate with this type of habitat requirement. Failure to do so will result to the extinction of fresh water fish population. Providing habitat for fresh water fish, food requirements should also be considered. Fresh water fishes are categorized as limnivores (mud- eaters, microorganisms eater), omnivores (eats both meat and vegetable foods), herbivores (vegetable and fruit eater), and carnivores (meat eaters). They should be separated as each cannot be combined because of their preferred foods. Omnivores can be associated with either carnivores or herbivores fishes.
